Awareness Session on Health and Good Working Conditions for Women Workers – Session II

An Awareness Session on Health and Good Working Conditions for Women Workers was jointly organized by the Women Empowerment Sub-Committee, TEA, and UN Women Empowerment Asia on 23 December 2025 at Nikkans Textile by combining women workers of both Nikkans Textile and Milestone Overseas. The objective of the session was to address key issues related to the health, safety, Gender based violence & harassment and working conditions of women workers in the garment industry.

Mrs. Sumita Ravi, Special Invitee, TEA, and Member, Women Empowerment Sub-Committee, TEA, welcomed all the participants.

Mr. M. Anand, Joint Secretary, TEA, shared his insights on workplace safety and the health of women workers in the garment sector. He highlighted that women constitute nearly 65% of the workforce in the garment industry, with approximately 4.5 to 5 lakh women employed in various roles across Tirupur. Additionally, he noted that both physical and mental health of workers significantly influence their productivity in factories, and illnesses such as diabetes, blood pressure, etc., should be diagnosed and treated in a timely manner.

Mr. Veluswamy, Partner, Nikkans Textile shared his thoughts about necessary health checkup and significance of women workers in growth of export sector.

Mrs. Uma, Technical Specialist, UN Women started the awareness session, covering the following key topics:

1.            Anemia: common causes and dietary measures to overcome it.

2.            Breast Cancer and its symptoms

3.            Significance of IPC Section 498A – Cruelty by husband or relatives (domestic cruelty)

4.            Work–life balance, including managing family and work responsibilities effectively.

5.            Health and nutrition for women workers.

6.            Importance of Menstrual Hygiene and Proper Disposal of Sanitary Napkins.

7.            General Awareness during climate changes for women.

8.     Workplace harassment, its mental effects on women, and the proper use of Internal Complaints Committees (IC Committee)

Mrs. P. Suganthi, member, Women Empowerment Sub-Committee expressed her views about significance of physical and mental health, along with the overall well-being of the family.

Mrs. V. Surithi, Vice-Chairman, Women Empowerment Sub-Committee delivered  the Vote of Thanks and appreciated the contributions of all participants, speakers, and organizers.

Mrs. Shrutika Sethu Madhavan, Chairman, Women Empowerment Sub-Committee,TEA and over 70 women workers attended the event.
